Job Title: Medical Manager

Department: Animal Care

Reports to: COO

Compensation: Full-Time or Part-Time
SUMMARY Wags and Walks is looking for a Medical Director to lead all aspects of medical treatment of rescue dogs. The Medical Director will be responsible for performing routine medical care and monitoring the health and welfare of Wags & Walks dogs both on-site at our adoption center and off-site including dogs that are with fosters and adopters. They must be well organized, motivated and possess a strong work ethic; and have the ability to positively interact with the volunteers, fosters, staff and adopters in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, while remaining calm, focused, consistent, resourceful and efficient.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

● Lead intake of all new dogs and assess when a dog needs to be seen by a veterinary professional

● Manage scheduling all vet appointments for all dogs on site, at our partner facility, NKLA, and in fosters

● Direct any appointments needed for dogs in foster care to supporting staff

● Oversee transport for dogs to/from vet appointments on site

● Perform medical tasks when needed such as administering medications, vaccines, de-wormer, flea meds, sub q fluid, ear clean/flush, etc.

● Ensure all dogs are properly bathed and groomed

● Obtain all records and medical history; keep database updated

● Perform regular intake exams at the adoption center and ensure all dogs have received appropriate medication, care, or any follow-ups needed

● Care for all dogs in general population as well as isolation

● Help establish, teach, and maintain proper safety & disease prevention protocols

● Assist with general daily and weekly deep cleaning routine of the kennels

● Help educate volunteers & fosters about identifying medical needs, administering medication/treatment, proper dog care

● Possess an understanding of the vets we use, the services they perform and rescue costs

● Help grow network of partner vets within the LA area including by researching, building and maintaining relationships with vets who can offer fair rescue rates

● Keep medical notes updated daily and provide medical language for adoption contracts

● Provide post-adoption medical support both routine and emergency

● Be on-call emergency medical contact

● Assist Animal Care staff with dog walks/exercise as needed

● Communicate with Medical Administrator regarding vet bills, medical budget and inventory

QUALIFICATIONS

● College Graduate

● Minimum of 1 year experience as a Veterinary Technician or Assistant

● Experience with rescue/shelter dogs preferred

● Must be flexible and able to work some nights and weekends

● Willing to be on-call for emergencies

● Computer proficient (Google docs, ability to learn new software, etc)

● Must have a current and valid California Driver’s License

● Must have and maintain a good driving record
