Last weekend, Wags & Walks participated in NKLA’s Adoption Weekend at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. This 2 day event joined local high kill shelters and rescues with the common goal of getting high risk animals in Los Angeles adopted into loving families as well as showing the community how many amazing family friendly dogs and cats are available at our city shelters. In other words, proving to the people of Los Angeles that rescue is the new black!
Wags & Walks brought over 20 of our adoptable dogs to this event including 9 gorgeous pit mix puppies, a variety of adorable small dogs and several fabulous large breed dogs like Shelby and Benny Bear - two of the most amazingly sweet pit bulls (both still available for adoption). With the help of an amazing team of volunteers, we were able to find 14 of our dogs new homes to call their own at the event.
Another goal of the weekend is to ensure no dog or cat brought to the event from a high kill shelter reenters the shelter system. In addition to the shelter animals brought to the event that were adopted straight into homes, participating rescues and Best Friends Animal Society are asked to help at the end of the event by rescuing the remaining dogs and cats. Wags & Walks was able to rescue 5 dogs from the event, including the sweet and lovable pit bull mamma Rosie as well as the athletic and handsome Anatolian Shepherd Kopi. .
In the end, 472 dogs, cats and even a few hamsters found their forever homes this past weekend and no dog or cat brought to the event returned to our city shelters. This was a record breaking number, and this event continued the effort toward turning LA into NKLA (No Kill Los Angeles). We are so proud to be a part of such a great movement!
