The last week of September is always an extra special week. No, not because it’s the first full week of fall and the temperatures are finally cooling down (maybe)...This week is National Dog Week! For Wags and Walks, every week is a celebration of the dogs of the world, but we’ll take any occasion to talk endlessly about how much we love (wo)man’s best friend.
This week is all about appreciation for our furry friends, and it is the perfect opportunity to do something special for/with your dog. So we’re sharing 5 ways you can show your dog how much he/she means to you. Not a dog parent but still a dog lover? Not to worry, we’ve got some pro tips in this list for how you can celebrate National Dog Week even if you’re not a dog owner.
1. Bake your dog homemade treats
Everyone loves homemade baked goods, including your dog. We’ve all been guilty of giving our pup a nibble of one of our human treats before (never chocolate!). Instead, give back to your best friend by spending some time baking him/her a special treat just for dogs. There are so many wonderful homemade and healthy dog treat recipes across the web! This time, it’ll be your dog’s turn to lick the bowl.
Stumped on ideas for what to make? Check out one of these pet treat recipes or ice cream treat recipes we’ve featured on the blog recently! From simple dog treats to a doggy cake, any homemade snack will make your dog feel extra special.
2. Take the day off from work...and spend it with your dog
For those of us who have to work in offices during the week, dog activities are normally relegated to the weekends. National Dog Week is the perfect excuse for you to play hooky and maybe head out of town for a hike or check out a new part of town with your pup by your side!
Or, you can always spend the whole day on the couch with your pup cuddling and watching Netflix. Throw an extra long walk or two in there and it sounds like a perfect National Dog Week day off to us!
3. Let your dog pick out a brand new toy
It’s not everyday you get your dog a new toy. We’d say national Dog Week might just be the perfect time to retire that chew toy your dog has all but destroyed and let him/her proudly walk out of the pet store with a brand new toy to fall in love with. After giving you 365 days of endless love, we’d say he/she deserves it!
4. Participate in a dog-centered cause you believe in
Whether you’re a dog owner or just a dog fan, take National Dog Week as an opportunity to give back to the greater doggy community. It could be something as simple as donating some of your extra dog supplies to a shelter or charity in need or even volunteering to take your friend’s dog on a midday walk if you know you’re around.
Maybe you’ve been considering fostering for a while and just haven’t submitted your application yet, or it could be that you’ve wanted to get more involved in a new organization - well, now’s the time! People assume donating money is the only way to give back to the causes they care about, when in reality there are so many ways to pitch in.
At Wags & Walks, you can volunteer in many ways - from walking some of our dogs, to fostering, transporting dogs to and from events or appointments, volunteering at events or even just spreading the word. If you’re interested, take a look at our volunteer page on our website to see how you can get involved!
5. Seek out doggie kisses every day, always
This last one’s pretty self explanatory. If you’re a dog person, you probably have this on your to-do list anyways. A dog kiss or hug can make anyone’s day better, so take this week to show the dogs of the world some extra love. Whatever this week brings you, we hope you take some time to honor a dog you love or to meet a new furry friend; we know we will!
