Although we appreciate our fosters every single day, we like to take a moment to show them a little extra love on our Foster Fridays. On these days, we pick a foster who has shown immense dedication, love and selflessness to express our appreciation for the work that they do.
On this Foster Friday, we are excited to spotlight a very special foster, Iliana. Iliana is only 10 years old, but she has already taken in 11 dogs for Wags & Walks! We don’t know who is cuter - Iliana, or the pups she fosters!
It is because of Iliana, and people like her, that we are able to make a difference in the lives of pups by giving them a second chance. Without further ado, please meet Iliana!
What got you started fostering for Wags & Walks?
I first started fostering for Wags & Walks because I was searching for an adoption center to volunteer at. I bumped into Wags & Walks and realized that you could foster as well as volunteer. The first dog I fostered was named Jo. After her, I continued fostering because our family loved meeting different dogs and figuring out new personalities!
To date, how many dogs have you fostered for Wags? Do you have a favorite? (Don't worry, we won't tell the others!)
My family has fostered 11 dogs so far and we will continue fostering more soon! My favorite foster so far has been Bridget. Bridget was sweet and a little timid at first, but she warmed up quickly and I got so attached to her that on the day I was giving her to her new adoption parents, I got a little teary. I was sad to see her go, but at the same time I was so happy that she had a home that would care for her.
What has been your biggest challenge fostering?
One of the biggest challenges is saying goodbye when they go to their adoption homes. My three siblings and I get attached, but at the same time we are proud that we helped save another dog!
How has fostering affected you?
Fostering has affected my family because every time we foster a dog, a little more love comes around. After each dog, we want to foster more and help rescue our furry friends.
What has been your biggest surprise as a foster parent?
Our biggest surprise was probably that it is crazy that these sweet, adorable dogs were either mistreated, left behind, or something happened to their owner before they came to Wags and Walks.
Do you have any advice for someone who is interested in becoming a foster?
If/when you are training a dog or puppy, always use positive—but firm—reinforcement. You want you foster pup to know that you are the boss, but that you are not going to hurt them.
Iliana is the true testament that age doesn’t matter. If you are passionate about something, you can make it happen. Thank you for your dedication and love for dogs, Iliana! All of us here at Wags & Walks appreciate you very much.
Iliana and all other fosters are crucial to the Wags and Walks mission. Because of our fosters, who provide a loving and safe home for the dogs, we are able to find the perfect furever homes for these pups. Interested in becoming a foster like Iliana?
