5 Reasons Dogs Make the Best of Friends

This Sunday, July 30, marks International Day of Friendship; a day coined by the UN to encourage people of all countries and backgrounds across the world to put aside their differences and come together as friends.

While the UN started this day to bring people together, at Wags and Walks we thought it obviously necessary to include our furry friends in the celebration! We are celebrating friendship the only way we know how - sharing 5 reasons (out of many) why our furry friends are great!

1. They are always ready to stay home and watch Netflix

A long day at work leaves you exhausted, and all you want to do is come home, plop down on the couch, and watch some Netflix. With a dog, that moment is encouraged...all of the time. Whether that’s cuddling or watching Netflix - or both - they’re just happy to hang out with their human.

What’s best about those after work or Saturday Netflix sessions is that, not only does your dog help you relax, but by being around your dog, you also help relieve his/her stress! It’s a win-win situation, and that’s what friendship is all about.

2. ...But they still keep you active

We know we said your dog is the perfect Netflix companion, but they also make sure you don’t turn into a couch potato. Being a dog owner means walks, and parks, and tug-of-war, and fetch, and all that good stuff that keeps you moving.

Keeping your furry friend happy and healthy keeps you healthy too! Every day you have a built in exercise buddy who helps remind you to take breaks and go for a walk or play fetch in the park. It’s way better than finding that “gym friend” because they won’t get mad at you if you make the destination of your afternoon walk an ice cream shop; if anything, they’ll want some too!

3. They show you what unconditional love and trust looks like

Feedback we hear constantly from our first time fosters and adopters is how surprised they were by how much they learned from the dogs they brought home. We actively talk about how rescuing dogs saves the animal’s life, but we can’t forget to highlight what joy and constant learning they bring into our lives.

It isn’t always love at first sight; it often takes time to build up that trust and devotion, but it’s unconditional. Sometimes it only takes a day, but even if it takes much more, there is nothing like being greeted by your pup’s big kisses and smiley face when you get home every day. The love our companion animals show us helps us to be more patient, kind, and overall happy, which is what best friends are for!

4. They help you meet new people and explore new places

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day when you live in a big city, but not when you have the perfect adventure buddy by your side! Every Saturday brunch is always packed with people and their pups sitting at tables outside, and all the mountains around Los Angeles are filled with people taking their dogs on hikes.

Whether it’s checking out that new dog park, dog friendly restaurant, or hike, your pup encourages you to get out and explore your surroundings, which often leads to making even more friends!

5. They show you how the greatest of friends come in all shapes and sizes

There are many reasons why we love dogs and are passionate about rescuing them, and it’s hard to just choose 5! In the spirit of the UN’s message for this holiday, we couldn’t leave this post without saying how much our pups show us that friendship knows no boundaries!

Our pups show us this through their love for their humans, but also, through the friendships they make with other dogs and even other animals! We’ve all seen the Buzzfeed articles featuring the unlikely friendship between a pit bull and a duckling, or a golden retriever and a goat.

We would like to point out that this post is dedicated to dogs, but we know that for many, this companionship may be with a cat (see some of our adoptable kittens!), or a rabbit, or even a not-so-furry fish!

Regardless of what species it may be, the companion animals we bring into our lives turn into some of the best friends we could ever ask for. Even when we don’t realize it, our pets are teaching us lessons on how to care more, experience new things, and just enjoy life. So in honor of celebrating friendship across the world, give your furry friend an extra big hug this Sunday!

We hope you have a great International Friendship Day! To stay updated on what’s new at Wags and Walks, please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Also, don’t forget to sign up for our e-mail newsletter. Who doesn’t love cute animal pupdates?
