Here at Wags and Walks, we LOVE mutts! That’s why we couldn’t be any more excited for National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day. The dogs we rescue are almost always mutts, and we think that makes them fun and unique. Mutts come in all shapes and sizes. Our staff, volunteers, and adopters love that each mixed dog that passes through our adoption center is completely unique in how it looks and acts. Here are just a few ways you can celebrate National Mutt Day with us today!
History of National Mutt Day
National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige and is celebrated twice a year, on December 2nd and July 31st. One day is not enough to celebrate and talk about mixed breed dogs. This is a significant holiday to us at Wags & Walks because almost all of the dogs we save are mutts. Mutts are the largest percentage of dogs abandoned and euthanized today. This is largely due to the over-breeding and public demand for purebred and “designer” dogs. We celebrate National Mutt Day because it gives us a chance to celebrate the dogs we rescue and raise awareness. About eighty percent of dogs in shelters today are mixed breeds. At Wags & Walks we love all dogs and want every furry friend that comes through our doors to go to a loving furever home.
Benefits of a Mixed Breed Dog
Mixed breed dogs have a lot to offer! Unlike purebred dogs, mixed breed dogs have a more diverse genetic makeup that tends to help them be less susceptible to genetic defects. Considered healthier, mixed breed dogs also frequently have a longer life expectancy.
Mixed breed dogs are also able to complete the same duties as a purebred dog. Mutts are used to sniff out drugs and bombs, assist search and rescue teams, acts as a guide to the blind, and act in tv shows and movies. For example, Benji, from the movie of the same name, was a mixed breed dog. Mutts are smart and can perform so many different jobs and tasks. When you adopt a mutt, you know you are getting a sweet, one-of-a-kind dog!
