Wags & Walks is a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue located in Nashville and Los Angeles— we share nonprofit identification, but we operate separately with different staff, processes, budgets, and dogs. As a whole, we are a community of dog lovers working to promote shelter dogs as the best dogs in the world through advocacy of our unique family-friendly foster and adoption programs.

+ Communications Specialist

SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist leads the strategy, execution, and optimization of all organization-wide communications across LA, Nashville, and NY. This position is responsible for building a cohesive national communications framework, crafting compelling email content, managing the Mailchimp database, overseeing segmented audience journeys, supporting donor development, and ensuring consistent messaging across all departments.

This role partners extensively with Marketing, Development, Adoptions, Foster, Medical, and Leadership teams to create high-quality communications that strengthen supporter engagement, drive fundraising, and elevate Wags & Walks’ national impact.

We are seeking a strategic communicator with excellent writing skills, hands-on experience in email marketing, and a track record of developing and managing communications for a mission-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities

Email Marketing & Communications Strategy

  • Lead the strategy, development, execution, and performance of all organization-wide email communications.
  • Build and oversee an org-wide national communications strategy, including a recurring national e-newsletter highlighting cross-location impact, major initiatives, and unified messaging.
  • Coordinate with LA, Nashville, and NY leads to ensure consistency and alignment between local updates and national communications.
  • Craft compelling, high-quality content that drives donor engagement, volunteer participation, foster recruitment, event attendance, and community awareness.
  • Partner closely with Development to create donor appeals, impact storytelling, stewardship communications, and campaign messaging.
  • Create and maintain drip campaigns, including donor development sequences, alumni and foster engagement, volunteer journeys, retention flows, and re-engagement automations.
  • Support organizational announcements, sensitive updates, and crisis communications as needed.
  • Maintain and evolve messaging frameworks and brand voice guidelines for the organization.
  • Contribute to internal communications that improve staff alignment and clarity.

Mailchimp & Database Management

  • Serve as the primary e-newsletter owner: segmentation, automations, tagging, audience hygiene, and compliance.
  • Build advanced segmentation beyond geography, including donor type, giving history, alumni adopters, fosters, volunteers, event attendees, and general supporters.
  • Maintain accurate tagging systems to map supporter journeys and target communications effectively.
  • Implement strategies to grow newsletter signups across website, events, foster/volunteer onboarding, partnerships, paid ads, and QR integrations.
  • Set up and analyze A/B tests to optimize subject lines, CTAs, content formats, send times, segmentation approaches, and conversion outcomes.
  • Build automated onboarding sequences for donors, fosters, volunteers, adopters, and new supporters.

Copywriting & Content Support

  • Write and support copy for graphics, social assets, donor materials, fundraising collateral, marketing campaigns, and presentations.
  • Draft or refine donor deliverables, including impact reports, stewardship emails, case studies, and grant-adjacent narrative content.
  • Support Development and Leadership teams by drafting materials for campaign decks, sponsorship pitches, presentations, and partner-facing collateral.
  • Collaborate with creative leads to ensure visual and written messaging align.
  • Serve as a key proofreader for organization-wide content, maintaining tone, accuracy, and professionalism.

Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Work closely with Marketing, Development, Adoptions, Foster, and Leadership teams to align messaging, deadlines, and strategic priorities.
  • Translate internal updates into clear, public-facing communications for donors, adopters, fosters, volunteers, and community members.
  • Promote programs, events, fundraising efforts, and organizational needs across all locations.
  • Provide staff with communication templates, writing support, and messaging guidance.
  • Collaborate with partnerships and development teams to integrate partner-focused campaigns and email-based sponsorship deliverables.
  • Website & Digital Content Support
  • Collaborate with Marketing to update and maintain website content, including program descriptions, impact stories, and campaign landing pages.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency across digital platforms, optimizing user experience and donor engagement.

Brand Voice & Message Governance

  • Maintain organizational messaging guides and ensure consistent tone and language across all channels.
  • Monitor communications across departments to ensure brand alignment and cohesion.
  • Community Engagement & Feedback
  • Draft and distribute supporter surveys to collect insights from donors, adopters, fosters, and volunteers.
  • Analyze engagement patterns to strengthen messaging and refine supporter journeys.
  • Incorporate audience insights into communications strategy to improve reach and effectiveness.
  • Reporting, Analytics & Continuous Improvement
  • Track communications KPIs and provide monthly performance reporting with insights and recommendations.
  • Continuously refine communications workflows, templates, automations, and processes.
  • Stay informed about trends in nonprofit communications, email marketing best practices, and modern storytelling approaches.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of communications, email marketing, or nonprofit marketing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational communications strategy.
  • Advanced proficiency in Mailchimp, including segmentation, automations, and analytics.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a strong attention to detail.

+ Office Coordinator - Part time

SUMMARY

The Office Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the smooth daily operations of the Wags & Walks Nashville Adoption Center. As the first point of contact for adopters, fosters, volunteers, and visitors, this role creates a welcoming, organized, and professional environment. The Office Coordinator oversees front desk operations, supports on-site volunteers, manages retail and merchandising, and assists with facility and administrative needs. This position is ideal for someone with strong customer service skills, excellent organizational skills, and a passion for working in a dynamic, people- and dog-centered environment. Multilingual candidates are a plus.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Front Desk & Guest Experience

  • Greet visitors, answer phones, respond to emails, and direct guests as needed.
  • Provide a warm and professional first impression, and maintain smooth foot traffic during open hours.
  • Support administrative tasks, including mail handling, scheduling, and data entry.

Volunteer Coordination (On-Site)

  • Serve as the point person for volunteers during open hours, greeting them, assigning tasks, and offering guidance.
  • Identify areas where volunteer support is needed and communicate with the Volunteer & Events team.
  • Help foster a positive and organized volunteer experience at the center.

Retail & Merchandising

  • Maintain and restock the retail area, ensuring accurate pricing and appealing product displays.
  • Track inventory, run reports, and collaborate on reorders.
  • Update Shopify and support product selection and merchandising strategies.

Facility & Operations Support

  • Keep the adoption center clean and organized between professional cleanings.
  • Restock supplies and snacks; maintain orderly public and staff spaces.
  • Coordinate with vendors for routine maintenance, repairs, and supply orders.
  • Manage shipments, deliveries, and daily logistics.

Administrative Support

  • Track office expenditures and manage service agreements (e.g., cleaning, maintenance).

+ Animal Caregiver - Level 1

SUMMARY

Our Animal Caretakers are responsible for overseeing the care and well-being of all the dogs in our adoption center. This job requires an outgoing, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to help us grow our rescue. It is physically demanding but also extremely rewarding. Dog lovers are encouraged to apply, but it's not a requirement.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows cleaning, feeding, and watering protocols to maintain the health of all animals.
  • Ensures every dog in our care is walked every four hours at a minimum. Keep boards and kennel cards updated in real-time.
  • Adheres to isolation and quarantine protocols when handling new or contagious animals.
  • Keeps the facility clean, safe, organized, sanitary, and presentable at all times.
  • Abides by intake protocols and procedures when processing new dogs.
  • Administers oral, topical, and injected medications to animals.
  • Assists medical staff with restraint, exams, and treatments.
  • Assists adoptions and foster staff with meet-and-greets, supply preparation, and pick-ups/drop-offs.
  • Ensures supplies are organized and properly stocked. Monitor all inventory and inform the Animal Care Manager of any needed supplies for animals, staff or volunteers.

QUALITIES

  • Must be a dog lover and possess some knowledge of basic dog behavior and needs. Must be willing to get hands dirty, be flexible, and reliable.
  • Must enjoy public speaking and communicating with a diverse group of volunteers.
  • Must have excellent customer service experience, proven attention to detail, and good organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be a team player and have a positive attitude. Personable, professional, upbeat and energetic.
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a diverse community in a professional, pleasant, respectful manner and use good judgment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideally, one year of professional experience working with dogs in a kennel environment.
  • Must be able to sit at a desk in front of a computer for several hours. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs to help move kennel crates, dog food, and other supplies.
  • Must have proficiency with computers, including Word, Excel, Slack, and Google Docs—the ability to learn new technology quickly.
  • Must have a current and valid TN Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

+ Marketing Lead

SUMMARY

The Marketing Lead oversees the day-to-day execution of all Nashville-based marketing and social media initiatives. This role creates compelling, timely content; manages the Nashville social presence; supports adoption, foster, volunteer, retail, and community programs; and ensures Wags & Walks Nashville shows up consistently and effectively across all channels. This is a highly hands-on, creative, and operational role ideal for someone who loves capturing content, telling stories, and driving engagement across platforms. The Lead will also support and help guide the Nashville Marketing Coordinator while working closely with the LA and national teams to ensure cohesive brand expression. This role is essential to maintaining momentum, visibility, and impact across the Nashville community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Content Creation & Social Media Management

  • Manage Nashville’s Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook channels, including posting and community engagement.
  • Capture, edit, and publish photo/video assets (Reels, Stories, TikToks, promotional content).
  • Build and maintain the Nashville social content calendar and ensure alignment with national campaigns.
  • Write clear, compelling captions and organize assets for smooth posting workflows.
  • Collaborate with fosters, volunteers, and staff to collect and curate high-quality content.
  • Ensure all content maintains brand consistency and reflects organization-wide messaging.
  • Assist with email marketing needs (updates, spotlights, donor pushes) as appropriate.

Team Supervision & Leadership Support

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support for the Nashville Marketing Coordinators.
  • Assign tasks, review content drafts, and offer feedback to elevate creative output.
  • Support coordinators in hitting deadlines, maintaining quality, and managing priorities.
  • Coordinate volunteer-driven content gathering as needed.
  • Note: This role supervises but does not serve as the formal manager; the Head of Marketing remains the official manager.

Local Strategy Execution & Reporting

  • Execute the marketing and content strategy set by national leadership.
  • Track performance metrics and share analytics, insights, and trends with the Head of Marketing.
  • Provide data-informed recommendations to improve content and engagement.
  • Contribute ideas to campaigns and calendars; support implementation of yearly and monthly plans.

Partnerships, PR & Influencer Support

  • Support execution of partnership deliverables, especially during campaigns.
  • Flag influencer or VIP engagement and assist with DM communication when appropriate.
  • Liaise with influencers or brand partners under the direction of leadership.
  • Assist with sourcing assets or preparing materials needed for PR or partnership initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Events

  • Work closely with the Nashville Executive Director, adoption, foster, retail, development, and events teams to meet content and promotional needs.
  • Attend events to capture content and support onsite marketing execution (including occasional weekends/evenings).
  • Support creation of event promotional materials (flyers, graphics, etc.) as needed.
  • Participate in weekly marketing meetings and provide updates, roadblocks, and insights.
  • Collaborate with the LA marketing team to align Nashville content with national campaigns and organizational messaging.
  • Ensure Nashville marketing consistently supports major organization-wide initiatives.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 3–5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field, preferably in the nonprofit or mission-driven sector
  • Proven experience creating and managing social media content across Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook
  • Strong understanding of brand storytelling, visual content strategy, and copywriting
  • Experience with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, and basic CMS platforms (e.g., Squarespace)
  • Comfortable using or learning project management tools (e.g., Monday.com, Airtable, Google Drive)
  • Familiarity with analyzing social media and email analytics to inform content strategy
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior staff or freelancers is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of influencer marketing, PR engagement, and digital partnerships is a plus

Work Style & Expectations

  • On-site presence at the Nashville Adoption Center four days per week is required.

+ Partnership Lead

SUMMARY

The Partnership Lead is responsible for maintaining and growing a portfolio of new and existing corporate and foundation sponsors and individual donors to support the organization’s continued growth in Los Angeles & New York while effortlessly collaborating with the Nashville team. This team member will be the primary point of contact for several existing corporate sponsor relationships that have been instrumental in building two fantastic adoption centers and hosting a successful annual Gala. Success in this role is contingent upon one’s ability to connect with stakeholders at all levels while always thinking about creative ways to build a long term partnership. The ideal candidate is passionate about dogs and can find joy in the direct impact that their fundraising efforts have on the organization’s impact.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Seamlessly picks up existing partner relationships with timely, thoughtful, and strategic responses.
  • Joins the team prepared to hit the ground running to form new corporate sponsors and foundation partnerships. Understands that while the organization has built an amazing base, there’s no playbook and it’s on this individual to constantly be taking initiative.
  • Reports to the VP of Strategic Development and ensures outreach efforts line up with the organization’s roadmap.
  • Collaborates closely with the Nashville team to maximize the strength of partnerships and ensure there’s no conflict of interest. There’s so much to be gained from the extra impact happening in other cities as it is one large organization.
  • Hits quarterly revenue goals for year long partnerships.
  • Uses a combination of existing relationships and cold outreach to lead all procurement efforts around the massive auction for the annual Gala / Neighborhood Social.
  • Handles the pickup and on-site logistics related to Gala items including at the Gala.
  • Assists with the management of volunteers + other supporting team members on the Gala auction efforts.
  • Balances the deliverables for Neighborhood Social and other campaigns when structuring pitches.
  • Collaborates closely with the social teams to identify brands and partners to reach out to while also ensuring proper execution takes place.
  • Works with the adoptions team to identify and connect with potential applicants / alumni that could support in forming any revenue generating partnership.
  • Attends relevant on / off site events to support the development team and build relationships. Ensuring that deliverables are meeting partner expectations is crucial.
  • Manages the flow of Peer to Peer Fundraising and Pup Club Membership.
  • Helps lead the Jr Board (Young Professionals) and the Development Committee to motivate the Wags & Walks network to maximize their efforts.
  • Build relationships with foundations as the role aims to line up warm leads for the grants team.
  • Explores grant submissions based on the role’s capacity and/or works with grant team members to build relationships and bridge gaps where needed.
  • Quickly builds infrastructure that allows for the role to manage interns and volunteers on an ongoing basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a college degree, Masters preferred.
  • Must have a proven track record of building relationships that lead directly to sales / donations.

  • 5+ years of fundraising / sales / partnership experience
  • Experience planning and working partners into a large scale event is preferred

+ Individual Giving Lead

SUMMARY

The Individual Giving Lead is joining Wags at a crucial period as it transitions into a new CRM and looks for the right person to execute strategic initiatives while also maintaining and building lasting relationships in their own donor portfolio. This role will work closely with the VP of Strategic Development and the Executive Directors in both Los Angeles and Nashville. The organization seeks a self-starter that’s comfortable ultimately being responsible for developing touch points and asks for different supporter types. To execute the touch points effectively, the role will need to align with the cadence and messaging already in place as they collaborate to grow the organization’s connectivity to the community.

The Individual Giving Lead has a solid foundation to work from as the organization is fortunate to have dedicated teams in all locations building meaningful relationships with their volunteer, adopter, and foster networks.

Success in this role is contingent upon one’s ability to connect with stakeholders at all levels while always thinking about creative ways to build long term relationships. The ideal candidate is passionate about rescue dogs and can find joy in the direct impact their fundraising efforts have on the organization’s growth.This is truly a unique opportunity for someone who aligns with the organization’s mission and has fundraising and/or sales experience, including process building, to get in at a time when they can make a meaningful difference.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Joins the team prepared to hit the ground running to form new individual donor relationships. Understands that while the organization has built an amazing base, there’s no playbook and it’s on this individual to constantly be taking initiative.

  • Works with the VP of Strategic Development and Executive Directors to identify a portfolio, along with KPIs, that consists of 150 existing Los Angeles based donors.

  • Works with the VP of Strategic Development and Executive Directors to identify goals around adding an additional 50 new donors to the portfolio.

  • Hits quarterly revenue goals for the two portfolio segments highlighted above.

  • While the donors are Los Angeles based, this role will check in with the Nashville Executive Director regularly to share strategies that can be replicated in Nashville while also getting organizational guidance.

  • Goes on a deep dive of all the organization’s external touch points and maps them out as they build internal relationships with relevant department leads.

  • Jumps into learning the organization’s new CRM platform (Virtuous) with the goal of becoming the organization’s “power user” within 45 days of starting.

  • Builds out a roadmap for maximizing Virtuous within the first 90 days of starting. *This may adjust based on the team member’s start date and what the organization has built out before hire.

  • Maximizing Virtuous to its full potential includes collaborating with the relevant teams to build out touch points such as:

  • Seamless relationship building with foster, adopter, and volunteer applicants with a strong giving history

  • Supporting the Adoptions team on an automated post adoption flow build out

  • Understanding individual giving impact as it relates to email campaigns through Virtuous

  • Serves as the project manager for the organization’s large annual auction. This includes cold outreach to procure items, working with interested volunteers and organizing the efforts of the Development Coordinators on the logistics involved with uploading and redemption.

  • Works with the VP of Strategic Development and the Executive Director to set campaign specific goals. Main campaigns include: Giving Tuesday, Gala, Neighborhood Social.

  • Attends relevant on / off site events to support the development team and build relationships. Ensuring that deliverables are meeting donor expectations is crucial.

  • At least three on site weekend days per month are required to help to develop relationships with new adopters.
