Meet Pumpernickel! This 1-year-old, 28lb Beagle mix is an incredibly sweet and affectionate girl who loves being close to her people. After spending her life outdoors at a large-scale hoarding situation, Pumpernickel is still learning what it means to be a house dog, but she’s already showing just how much love she has to give. Pumpernickel is happiest following her people around, getting cuddles and attention, and curling up beside them. She’s medium energy and loves exploring and sniffing around, but she’s also happy to settle down with her favorite people. She gets along well with other dogs and seems to take confidence from canine companions, often following their lead as she settles into new situations! She may take some time to warm up, especially in public or unfamiliar places, but she becomes much more comfortable in a home environment. Pumpernickel is still working through a few areas of house-dog life. She has some separation anxiety and is currently not comfortable in a crate, but her fosters are working diligently with her. Her foster has found that she sleeps peacefully on a dog bed beside them at night, and she’ll need a patient adopter who can continue working on her crate training and separation anxiety. She is also still working on potty training and does best going potty in a yard rather than on leash, so a home with a securely fenced yard would be ideal! Pumpernickel can also be protective of whatever bed, couch, or chair she is resting on and show some resource guarding tendencies if approached while she’s there. She hasn’t shown aggression beyond a grumble, but her adopter should be comfortable continuing to work on this behavior with positive guidance and management. Pumpernickel has come a long way already, and with patience, consistency, and a loving home, we think she’ll continue to blossom into the wonderful companion she’s meant to be.
